2026 Ford Mustang Buyer's Guide
The 2026 Ford Mustang is the last of its kind — a rear-wheel-drive American sports car still offered with a naturally aspirated V8 and a real manual gearbox. The lineup runs from a 315-horsepower turbocharged four to a 500-horsepower Dark Horse, in fastback and convertible. Here is the complete guide to models, engines, and what changed for 2026, verified against Ford's published specifications.
What is new on the 2026 Ford Mustang?
For 2026, the Mustang adds three new colors — Avalanche Gray, Adriatic Blue Metallic, and Orange Fury Metallic Tri-coat — bringing the palette to ten. New seat belt colors join Race Red, the Ford Connectivity Package is included for a year, and two new packages arrive: the FX Package on GT Premium and the RTR Package on the EcoBoost fastback.
2026 Ford Mustang — the key changes
- Three new colors — Avalanche Gray, Adriatic Blue Metallic, and Orange Fury Metallic Tri-coat, for ten available in total.
- New seat belt colors — Black with Red Stripe, International Orange, and Prime Blue join the available Race Red on select models.
- Mustang FX Package — exclusive to GT Premium fastback and convertible, with Oxford White painted wheels, Oxford White badging, black mirror caps, and unique white taillamps.
- Mustang RTR Package — exclusive to the EcoBoost fastback, developed with Vaughn Gittin Jr.'s RTR Vehicles. Adds anti-lag turbocharger technology, Dark Horse suspension components, Brembo brakes, and a class-first electronic drift brake.
- Ford Connectivity Package included for one year across the lineup.
- Mustang TLD Signature Edition — just 550 built, designed with action-sports designer Troy Lee, on GT components with Sinister Bronze wheels.
The 2026 Mustang also carries a strong quality record. Ford reports it was named best-in-class in initial quality among sporty cars, and the brand placed first for new-vehicle quality two years running.
What models does the 2026 Ford Mustang come in?
The 2026 Mustang comes in five series: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, and Dark Horse. Each is offered as a fastback, and three of them are available as a convertible. A supercharged Dark Horse SC joined the lineup for 2026 as the highest-output Mustang.
Mustang EcoBoost
The entry point, and not a stripped one. A 2.3L EcoBoost turbocharged four, 10-speed automatic, 3.15 limited-slip rear axle, electronic line-lock for track use, selectable drive modes, a 12.4-inch digital cluster paired with a 13.2-inch touchscreen, and Ford Co-Pilot360 as standard. Rides on 18-inch Shadow Silver cast aluminum wheels.
Mustang EcoBoost Premium
Adds the comfort and technology layer: ActiveX seating material, heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting with MyColor, approach detection with welcome lighting, a nine-speaker audio system, and available magnesium-framed panoramic curved display.
Mustang GT V8
Where the 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 arrives, along with a standard 6-speed manual transmission with rev matching, a 3.55 limited-slip rear axle, larger brake rotors with four-piston fixed calipers, a hood vent, and unique front fascia. The available GT Performance Package adds Brembo brakes, a TORSEN differential, K-brace, upsized sway bars, and a drift brake.
Mustang GT Premium
GT hardware with the Premium interior. ActiveX seating, heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, auto-dimming frameless rearview mirror, 19-inch Shadow Silver painted aluminum wheels, and the new FX Package as an option. This is also the only V8 Mustang offered as a convertible.
Mustang Dark Horse PERFORMANCE FLAGSHIP
A modified Gen-4 5.0L Coyote V8 producing 500 horsepower, standard MagneRide damping, Brembo six-piston front calipers, engine oil, transmission and differential coolers, a standard drift brake, a dual air intake box and dual throttle body, and a unique chassis number on the instrument panel. Offered with a TREMEC 6-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic. Fastback only.
How much horsepower does the 2026 Ford Mustang have?
The 2.3L EcoBoost is rated at 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. The 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 in the GT makes 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft, rising to 486 horsepower and 418 lb-ft with the available active valve performance exhaust. The Dark Horse's modified 5.0L Coyote V8 makes 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft.
| Engine | Horsepower | Torque | Found on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 | 315 @ 5,500 rpm | 350 lb-ft @ 3,000 rpm | EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium |
| 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 | 480 @ 7,150 rpm | 415 lb-ft @ 4,900 rpm | GT, GT Premium |
| 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 with active valve exhaust | 486 @ 7,250 rpm | 418 lb-ft @ 4,900 rpm | GT, GT Premium |
| Modified 5.0L Coyote V8 | 500 @ 7,250 rpm | 418 lb-ft @ 4,900 rpm | Dark Horse |
| 5.2L supercharged V8 | 795 @ 7,200 rpm | 660 lb-ft @ 4,600 rpm | Dark Horse SC |
Two things worth knowing about those numbers. Every one of them is a 93-octane rating. Ford publishes Mustang horsepower and torque on premium fuel and does not publish a regular-fuel figure, so when you see 315 or 480 or 500 quoted with no asterisk anywhere else, that is the premium number.
The second is more useful when you are actually configuring one. On the GT, the active valve performance exhaust changes the engine's rating — 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft without it, 486 and 418 with it. An exhaust option is not usually a power option. On this car it is, and almost nobody mentions it.
Transmissions
The EcoBoost is offered with a 10-speed automatic only. The GT and GT Premium come standard with the MT82-D4 6-speed manual with rev matching, with the 10-speed SelectShift automatic available. The Dark Horse comes standard with a TREMEC 6-speed manual with rev matching, with the 10-speed automatic available, and the 3.73 TORSEN rear axle comes with the manual. The Dark Horse SC uses a TREMEC 7-speed dual-clutch.
Which 2026 Mustangs come as a convertible?
Three: the Mustang EcoBoost Convertible, the EcoBoost Premium Convertible, and the GT Premium Convertible. There is no GT convertible and no Dark Horse convertible, so a V8 drop-top means stepping up to GT Premium.
This trips up more shoppers than any other part of the Mustang lineup. If you want a V8 with the top down, GT Premium is the only way to get there — the standard GT is fastback only. The Dark Horse is fastback only as well.
| Series | Fastback | Convertible |
|---|---|---|
| EcoBoost | Yes | Yes |
| EcoBoost Premium | Yes | Yes |
| GT | Yes | No |
| GT Premium | Yes | Yes |
| Dark Horse | Yes | No |
What are the 2026 Mustang's key specs?
Every 2026 Mustang rides on a 107-inch wheelbase, is rear-wheel drive, holds 16 gallons of fuel, and seats a maximum of four. The fastback measures 189.4 inches long and 55 inches tall; the Dark Horse is 189.7 inches long and 55.2 inches tall.

The convertible gives up trunk space and rear shoulder room to the fastback, but it is not smaller in every dimension — rear headroom actually improves slightly with the folding top. Curb weights run from roughly 3,588 lbs for an EcoBoost fastback up to about 4,012 lbs for a GT Premium convertible with the automatic.
